The third collaboration between Intruder X and Within Shadows is a dark, existential chugfest that offers precision production and a djent-heavy journey into the void that opens after the heart stops. Released on June 20, “NDE” (an acronym for Near Death Experience) is a haunting and harrowing track that is densely populated by a tight, syncopated rhythm section and a real life brush with death.
Nearly 3 years since collaborating on the track “She’s Hot”, Intruder X and Within Shadows have linked up again to share their heaviest and most finely-produced song to date. “NDE” mines the depths of what it truly means to be untethered – floating between life and death, and questioning all the choices that led to that suspended moment. Inspired by a near death experience faced by Joe Farias (Intruder X), the material that makes up “NDE” hits closer to home and offers a rare glimpse into one person’s experience facing down the end.
Utilizing all the tools in the progressive metal toolbox, “NDE” is rhythmically expansive, vocally thematic, and sounds unlike anything this partnership has produced so far. The crushing and eerie atmosphere established in “NDE” is the perfect backdrop to the raw and terrifyingly bleak lyrics. There is a building sense of dread throughout the song accompanied by the feeling of being at the mercy of an unseen, unfathomable element.
The partnership between Intruder X and Within Shadows showcases each artists’ strengths and pushes their boundaries into new territory. While “NDE” represents a departure from what this duo has produced before, it signifies their ability to create outside of their wheelhouse – and to great effect.
